Method development

ASE extraction and separation method

I developed a method that can simultaneously extract and separate organic compounds most used for paleoclimate reconstructions (n-alkanes, alkenones and GDGTs) using an Accelerated Solvent Extractor (ASE). This methods aims to reduce time spent in the lab, gets a better recovery of compounds in comparison to classical approaches (manual gravity columns) and increases the reproducibility amongst various users.

Robustness of fossil-bound nitrogen isotope measurements

In this study we underscore the robustness of fossil-bound N isotope analysis:

  • Fossil-bound organic matter is well protected by the mineral matrix from chemical changes in the surrounding environment
  • Partial dissolution of fossil calcite, aragonite, opal, and enamel has a negligible effect on their N isotopes and N content
  • During heating, fossil N content and isotopic composition remains unchanged if the structure of the inorganic matrix is not compromised
